Useful list and advice for your procedures.

All the documents don't have to be translated by a sworn translator. The necessity of a certified translation depends on the use of the document and the organisation it is intended to.

Here is a clear overview of the documents that are most often in question.

Offical documents : the most frequent ones.

Official documents are almost systematically asked with a certified translated version :

  • birth certificates,

  • marriage certificates,

  • death certificates,

  • family record books.

They are compulsory for :

  • administrative procedures,

  • international marriages,

  • citizenship or residence permit applications.

Diplomas and school documents.

Schools generally demand :

  • certified translation of your diplomas,

  • transcript of marks,

  • school or completion certificates.

The translation must be :

  • faithful,

  • complete,

  • presented in a clear and true manner.

A mistake or an omission can question the whole application.

Legal and administrative documents.

Are particularly concerned :

  • court rulings,

  • sentences,

  • police records,

  • documents issued by an administration.

In these cases, the translation must use the legal vocabulary, without any approximation.

Professional documents.

Depending on the context, some professional documents also require a certified translation :

  • contracts,

  • certificates,

  • documents linked to the job or expatriation.

It is essential to check the specific requirements of the recipient organisation.

What about the personal documents ?

CV, cover letters or personal applications do not always require a certified translation. However, some administrations or employers can ask for it.

Hence the importance to get information before translating.

The good habit for a certified translation : thinking before acting.

If in doubt, you'd better ask before getting a document translated. It permits :

  • to save time,

  • to avoid useless costs,

  • to guarantee the compliance of the application from the beginning.
